SUPERNOVA 2010kh IN UGC 11657

R. J. Foley, R. Chornock, N. Sanders, and I. Czekala, Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics, on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a
spectrum (range 320-830 nm), obtained on Dec. 9.06 UT with the Blue Channel
Spectrograph on the 6.5-m MMT telescope, shows that 2010kh (cf. CBET 2562) is
a type-IIb supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra
using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J.
666, 1024) shows that the best fit for 2010kh is to the spectrum of the type-
IIb supernova 1993J at a phase of 3-7 days after maximum brightness. The
absorption minimum of H-alpha is blueshifted by 14600 km/s.

SUPERNOVAE 2010ji, 2010kq, AND 2010kr

R. J. Foley and R. Chornock, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics,
on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a spectrum (range 320-830 nm),
obtained on Dec. 10 UT with the Blue Channel Spectrograph on the 6.5-m MMT
telescope, shows that 2010ji (cf. CBET 2528) is a type-II supernova, a few
months after explosion; the absorption minimum of H-alpha is blueshifted by
5200 km/s. SNe 2010kq (cf. CBET 2578) and 2010kr (cf. CBET 2579) are type-Ia
events. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the
"Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024) shows the best-fit ages for 2010kq and 2010kr are 1 day before and 23
days after maximum brightness, respectively. SN 2010kq shows evidence for C
II 658.0-nm absorption blueshifted by 11800 km/s, which is a similar velocity
to that found for Si II 635.5-nm (11200 km/s).

the new object on a CCD image taken with a 1.3-m f/4.85 reflector on Dec.
10.532 UT.
W. Pietsch, M. Henze, and V. Burwitz, Max-Planck-Institut fuer
Extraterrestrische Physik); A. Kaur and D. H. Hartmann, Clemson University;
and P. Milne and G. Williams, University of Arizona, report the discovery of
M31N 2010-12b on twelve stacked, 60-s R-band CCD images obtained with the
robotic 60-cm telescope (+ E2V CCD camera) of the Livermore Optical Transient

200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera). The new object is
lcated 149" west and 672" north of the center of the galaxy M31.
Guoyou Sun (Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China) and Xing Gao (Urumqi, Xinjiang,
China) report their discovery of M31N 2010-12b at mag approximately 17.7 on
several unfiltered 60-s survey CCD images (limiting mag about 19.0) taken by
Xing Gao in the course of the Xingming Observatory Sky Survey at Mt. Nanshan
around Dec. 11.517 UT using a Celestron C14 0.36-m f/6.9 Schmidt-Cassegrain

(596) SCHEILA

S. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL), University of Arizona,
reports that images of the main-belt minor planet (596), taken on Dec. 11.44-
11.47 UT with the 0.68-m f/1.8 Schmidt telescope at Catalina, show the object
to be in apparent outburst with a comet-like appearance, showing a total V
magnitude of about 13.4 and an envelope that extends 2' north and 5' west of
the central condensation. The cometary appearance has been confirmed by other
observers, including R. Kowalski with the Mt. Lemmon 1.5-m f/2 reflector on
Dec. 11.54; H. Sato (Tokyo, Japan) remotely with a 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector at
the RAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., on Dec. 11.5 (noting a wide and
diffuse tail 1'.5 long in p.a. 280 degrees, with a spike-like tail 45" long
toward p.a. 225 degrees); and K. Yoshimoto (Hirao, Yamaguchi, Japan; forwarded
by S. Nakano, Sumoto), whose unfiltered CCD image on Dec. 11 taken with a
0.16-m f/6.3 reflector shows a coma diameter of 1'.3 and a tail 1' long in
p.a. 250 deg. Alex Gibbs, LPL, has looked at recent Catalina images of (596)
taken on 2010 Oct. 18, Nov. 2, Nov. 11, and Dec. 3; he notes that the object
appears essentially stellar in appearance on the first three dates (with the
object's V magnitude in November being around 14.5 on sets of four co-added
30-s exposures), but that on Dec. 3.4 it shows some slight diffuseness with V
magnitude 13.2 on four 45-s co-added exposures.

COMET C/2010 X1 (ELENIN)

Leonid Elenin (Lyubertsy, Russia) reports his discovery of a comet on
four 240-s unfiltered CCD exposures taken remotely with a 0.45-m f/2.8
astrograph at the ISON-NM observatory near Mayhill, NM, USA, on Dec. 10.435
UT (discovery observation tabulted below). After posting on the Minor
Planet Center's "NEOCP" webpage, other cometary astrometrists have noted the
object's cometary appearance. A. Sergeyev (Kharkov, Ukraine) and A. Novichonok
(Kondopoga, Russia) write that four stacked 300-s CCD images taken with a
1.5-m f/8 reflector at the Majdanak Observatory in Uzbekistan on Dec. 11.0 show
a teardrop-shaped, very diffuse coma of diameter 6" (total magnitude 19.1;
magnitude of nuclear condensation 20.7) and a tail of length 10"-12" in p.a.
298 deg. W. H. Ryan obtained R-band CCD images with the Magdalena Ridge
Observatory's 2.4-m f/8.9 reflector on Dec. 12.47-12.49 that show the object
to be diffuse with a tail in p.a. about 315 deg. R. S. McMillan, J. V. Scotti,
and M. L. Terenzoni report that five 60-s R-band images taken through thin
clouds on Dec. 12.5 with the Steward Observatory 2.3-m f/3 Bok telescope (+
90Prime CCD camera) at Kitt Peak in 2" seeing show a coma diameter of about 7"
and a tail extending 10" in p.a. 290 deg. H. Sato (Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan)
obtained CCD images remotely with a 0.50-m f/6.8 reflector at the RAS
Observatory near Mayhill on Dec. 12.51 that show an 8" coma and a 45" tail
toward p.a. 285 degrees.

SUPERNOVA 2010kt

J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, R. Cartier, F. Forster, and
S. Silva, Universidad de Chile; G. Pignata and M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres
Bello; P. Gonzalez, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; B. Conuel,

K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze,
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project,
report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 16.8 +/-
0.5) in the galaxy cluster NGC 1759 on an unfiltered CCD image taken on Dec.
10.31 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 1' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The
new object, which is also present a mag approximately 17.0 in images taken on
Dec. 12.04 and 13.20, is located at R.A. = 5h00m39s.19 +/- 0".2, Decl. =
-38o40'46".1 +/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0). Nothing is visible at this position
on archival images taken on Oct. 15.28 (limiting mag 18.0) and Sept. 7.25
(limiting mag 18.5).

G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello; and G. Folatelli, IPMU, University
of Tokyo; on behalf of the Millennium Center for Supernova Science, report on
an optical spectrogram (range 355-887 nm) of 2010kt obtained on Dec. 13.14 UT
with the SOAR telescope (+ Goodman HTS). The spectrum shows 2010kt to be a
normal type-Ia supernova at about two weeks after maximum light. Cross-
correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) provides
good matches with spectra of SNe 1989B, 1994D, and 1996X between +12 and +14
days.

COMET 103P/HARTLEY

E. Jehin, J. Manfroid, D. Hutsemekers, M. Gillon, and P. Magain, Liege
University, report narrowband imaging of comet 103P using the TRAPPIST 0.60m
telescope at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla. Three to four hours
of observation were secured on 26 clear nights from Oct. 29 to Dec. 7, using
six different cometary filters (Farnham et al. 2000, Icarus 147, 180). The
flux of five gaseous species (CN, OH, H_2O+, C_2, C_3) and the dust continuum
(via the C/1995 O1 green continuum filter, GC) was measured in a 26" aperture.
Periodic variations of the gas species are observed, superimposed on the
long-term trend, with CN showing the strongest variations (0.4-mag amplitude).
The dust light curve is nearly flat. No gas or dust outburst has been
detected during the above period of observation, although CN and OH show a
slow flux increase with respect to other species during several days in early
November. A period search with the first two weeks of data gave a smooth
phase diagram for a period of 18.4 +/- 0.3 hours. These observations are in
good agreement with the period reported from Arecibo radar observations of
the nucleus (18.1 +/- 0.3 hours on Oct. 24-27; IAUC 9179). Including two
more weeks of data, it became clear that the period was increasing. A change
from about 18.2 to 19 hours was derived during the above observing window that
might be related to a change of the rotation period of comet 103P of about 2
hours in 100 days. Such a rapid slowing down is in agreement with rotation
values reported before perihelion (16.6 +/- 0.5 hr on Aug. 13-17; IAUC 9163).

(596) SCHEILA

Further to CBET 2583, Brian Warner (Palmer Divide Observatory) and Alan
Harris (MoreData!; La Canada, CA, U.S.A.) call attention to photometric
lightcurve observations made by Warner (2006, Minor Planet Bull. 33, 58-62),
where he found a rotational period of 15.89 hours and an amplitude of
variation of 0.09 magnitude. The lightcurve as published there was given only
as relative photometry, but Warner was able to re-analyze the images using
newer standardization methods to obtain absolute magnitude levels within about
0.02 mag. The re-reduced data confirmed the previously reported period and
amplitude, but also allowed him to obtain a phase relation and fit to the H-G
magnitude phase relation. The result is H = 8.84 +/- 0.04 and G = 0.076 +/-
0.06. The G value is about as expected for a dark object, and the H value is
in remarkably close agreement with the H value carried by the Minor Planet
Center (8.9) with an assumed value of G = 0.15. Indeed, with a constrained
value of G = 0.15, Warner's data yields a value of H = 8.90 exactly. It
appears that the absolute magnitude of (596) Schelia was stable and as
expected in the months of observation in 2004-2005, and in close agreement
with the set of observations used to derive the MPC's value for H. Turning
to the present epoch, the magnitudes reported by Larson and Gibbs (CBET 2583)
in November were already a few tenths of a magnitude brighter than what was
predicted from the well-determined "quiescent" phase relation, and the
December observations (where coma is clearly visible) have total magnitudes
about one full magnitude brighter than the quiescent predicted level. The
well-determined "quiescent" phase relation and the low amplitude of variation
will allow the excess brightness due to the current outburst to be
quantitatively estimated, so monitoring the total brightness will be of
high value.

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports that K. Yoshimoto, Yamaguchi, Japan,
observed (596) on Dec. 11.788 UT at mag 13.7 with coma diameter 1'.3 on an
unfiltered CCD image taken with a 0.16-m f/6.3 reflector. A tail 1' long
extended in p.a. 250 deg.

E. Guido, Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, reports that CCD images taken
of (596) by Sostero and himself with a 0.43-m f/6.8 reflector at Nerpio on
Dec. 12.0 UT show a wide spiral tail with the longest part extending 1' in
p.a. 280 deg and a smaller part extending 30" in p.a. 22 deg.

V. Nevski, Vitebsk, Belarus, reports that ten stacked 120-s CCD exposures
taken of (596) on Dec. 12.09 UT with a 0.3-m reflector show an asymmetric coma
0'.5 in size and a fan-shaped tail 1' long in p.a. 260 deg.

T. Yusa, Osaki, Japan, reports that CCD images of (596) taken on Dec.
12.3 UT remotely with a 0.25-m f/3.4 hyperbolic astrograph at the RAS
Observatory (near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.) show a coma diameter of 0'.6, a
wide spiral tail 1'.5 long in p.a. 280 deg, and a diffuse tail 1' long in
p.a. 240 deg.

S. Foglia writes that CCD images taken by L. Buzzi, P. Concari, G. Galli,
M. Tombelli, and himself remotely with a 0.18-m f/7.3 refractor located at
the Tzec Maun Observatory (near Cloudcroft, NM, U.S.A.) on Dec. 12.45 UT
show a "cometary feature" extending 1'.5 north and 4' west of the central
condensation.

E. Bryssinck, Kruibeke, Belgium, reports that ten unfiltered 120-s CCD
exposures obtained on Dec. 13.05 UT with a 0.4-m astrograph (+ ST-10XME camera)
show a spiral structure with the most prominent part of the tail being about
30" long in p.a. 32 deg, but a longer spiral tail extends to about 2' from
the nuclear condensation in p.a. 283 deg. A smaller spiral tail initially
heads southward but then turns to p.a. 231 deg and extends to about 45".
A coma diameter of about 1'.50 and magnitude 13.5 was measured with a Cousins
R filter.

J. J. Gonzalez reports that his visual observation of (596) with a
20.3-cm f/10 reflector on Dec. 14.09 UT from a mountain location at Aralla,
Leon, Spain, yields total mag 11.7 with an asymmetric coma having a faint outer
region and a tail-like feature extending 4' from the center in p.a. 290 deg; he
also noted a starlike central condensation of mag 13.8.

(596) SCHEILA

L. A. Molnar, Calvin College, reports that photometric lightcurve
observations of the minor planet (596), taken on Dec. 14.30-14.54 and 15.33-
15.53 UT with the 0.40-m f/8 Ritchey-Chretien telescope of the Calvin-Rehoboth
Observatory, folded on the rotational period of Warner (2006, Minor Planet
Bull. 33, 58-62) display a shape similar to those previous measurements with
an amplitude that is the same (0.09 magnitude). The average brightness was
observed to be a full magnitude above the expected value, as it has been since
the outburst was first observed on Dec. 3 (Warner and Harris, CBET 2590;
Larson, IAUC 9188). There are two models of the increased brightness:
reflection off material surrounding the solid object (as in a cometary
outburst) or increased albedo of the object's surface (caused by a coating of
lighter material). The cometary outburst model suggests a lightcurve
amplitude diminished by 2.5 times, and is thus disfavored. The albedo model
predicts no large change in amplitude, as is observed; it also predicts that
the enhanced brightness will persist indefinitely.

Corrigendum. On CBET 2590, first paragraph, line 16, FOR 2004-2005,
READ 2005-2006,

GEMINID METEORS 2010

P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute, reports that the Geminids had a regular
return in 2010, with a peak rate ZHR = 140 +/- 30 meteor/hr at solar longitude
262.2 deg. The International Meteor Organization (http://www.imo.net) reports
ZHR = 82 meteors/hr at solar longitude 261.7 deg, just before the peak, while
K. Mameta (Kobe, Japan; via S. Nakano, Sumoto), had an average ZHR = 115
meteors/hr at solar longitude 262.4 deg, just after the peak. Observing from
Fremont Peak Observatory (California), P. Jenniskens and M. Koop detected what
appear to be lunar impacts on Dec. 14d02h45m09s and 14d03h11m08s.5 UT while
monitoring the dark side of the moon for potential impact flashes during
Dec. 14.073-14.303 UT using a Celestron C8 (20-cm f/10) telescope (+ Watec
920H2 Ultimate camera in prime focus); the two clear events that were seen
during operatios were later confirmed by checking the tapes, and additional
processing will be forthcoming regarding location on the lunar surface,
brightness information, etc.

J. M. Trigo-Rodriguez, Institute for Space Sciences, Consejo Superior de
Investigaciones Cientificas; J. M. Madiedo, Universidad de Huelva; P. Pujols,
Agrupacio Astronomica Osona; J. C. Millan, Asocciacion Astronomica Hubble;
J. A. Azcarate, Universidad de Castilla, La Mancha; J. Zamorano and F. Ocana,
Universidad Complutense, Madrid, report that their video stations operating
in the framework of the Spanish Fireball Network saw a rate ZHR = 80 +/- 7
meteors/hr (for the magnitude distribution index, r = 1.8, derived from the
observations; and the number of meteors filmed, N = 45, for meteors brighter
than magnitude 4) between Dec. 13.9 and 14.1 UT (mean solar longitude 261.7
deg). Remarkable was the detection of three bolides brighter than the moon
at Dec. 13d21h46m14s, 13d23h13m52s, and 14d00h34m01s UT, corresponding to
solar longitudes 261.65 to 261.75 deg.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31

Jiangao Ruan, Fangchenggang, Guangxi, China; and Xing Gao, Urumqi,
Xinjiang, China, report the discovery of a possible nova (mag approximately
17.2) on one 60-s unfiltered CCD survey image (limiting mag about 19.0) taken
by Xing Gao in the course of the Xingming Observatory Sky Survey at Mt.
Nanshan around Dec. 15.528 UT using a Celestron C14 35.6-cm f/6.9 Schmidt-
Cassegrain telescope. The new object is approximately located at R.A. =
0h42m56s.67 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = +41d17'21".2 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which
is about 139" east and 73" north of the center of NGC 224. Additional
Xingming magnitudes for the variable: Dec. 13, [19.0; 14, [19.0; 16.517,
17.1; 16.518, 17.0. Nothing is visible at this position on a Digitized Sky
Survey image (from a IIIa-J plate + GG495 filter) taken on 1985 Dec. 17.
The Xingming images have been posted at the following website URL:
http://www.xjltp.com/XOSS/XM08JR/XM08JR.htm.

Kamil Hornoch and Adrian Galad, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov, report
their independent discovery of the above variable in M31 on a co-added 2340-s
R-band CCD frame taken under poor conditions on Dec. 16.729 UT with the 0.65-m
telescope at Ondrejov. The new object is well visible on single images used
for the co-added frame and is located at R.A. = 0h42m56s.67, Decl. =
+41o17'21".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 139" east and 73" north of the center
of M31. The measured position is only about 0".7 from the best position for
the "Fe II"-class nova M31N 2010-01a (cf. CBETs 2124, 2127, 2136, 2187) that
was measured by Hornoch from the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope image taken by J.
Prieto and R. Khan on 2010 Jan. 13.110 UT, which suggests that the currently
detected bright object could be caused by another outburst of M31N 2010-01a.
Available R-band magnitudes for the variable during its current outburst,
measured by Hornoch: Dec. 4.211 UT, [21.7 (P. Garnavich and J. Pagnini,
1.83-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope + Vatt4k imager); 13.930, [18.5
(Hornoch, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 16.729, R = 16.5 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch
and Galad, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov).

Following a request from Kabashima and Nishiyama, T. Yusa (Osaki, Japan)
writes that he has confirmed the appearance of the above variable at mag 16.4
on 90-s unfiltered CCD exposures (limiting mag 18.5) taken on Dec. 17.392 UT
using a 0.30-m f/7 Cassegrain telescope (+ SBIG STL-1001E camera); he measured
position end figures 56s.64, 21".3 for the variable, and his image is posted
at URL http://www.palette.furukawa.miyagi.jp/space/images/PNinM31_101217.jpg.
